Walfredo Reyes Jr.

2608

Walfredo Reyes Jr., Cuban-born drummer and percussionist, has built a wide-ranging career that bridges rock, Latin, jazz, pop, and world music. Born in Havana and raised in a deeply musical family, he grew up immersed in Afro-Cuban and Caribbean rhythms before establishing himself as a versatile drummer equally comfortable behind a full drum kit or combining drums with hand percussion.

Reyes has been a core member of Chicago since 2012, initially joining as a percussionist before stepping into the role of full-time drummer in 2018. He continues to anchor the band’s live performances, touring extensively throughout the United States and internationally. Recent tours through 2024 and 2025 have kept Chicago active on the road, with Reyes providing both rhythmic power and stylistic flexibility across the band’s extensive catalog.

In addition to his work with Chicago, Reyes remains active as a recording artist and bandleader. He continues to develop original music through small-ensemble projects that highlight groove, melody, and improvisation, blending Latin influences with jazz and contemporary rhythms. Alongside performing, he is involved in studio work and collaborative projects that reflect his hybrid approach to drumming and percussion.

Education and outreach remain an important part of his work. Reyes regularly presents drum and percussion clinics, sharing practical touring experience, rhythm integration concepts, and musical approaches shaped by decades of professional performance. His clinics emphasize musical feel, adaptability, and the importance of listening across genres.

Reyes lives in the Midwest with his family and balances touring, recording, education, and creative projects, maintaining an active presence as both a working drummer and mentor within the global drumming community.
