Dafnis Prieto, Cuban-born drummer, composer, bandleader, and educator, has shaped contemporary Latin jazz with a creative voice that blends Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz improvisation, and modern composition. Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, he studied classical and Afro-Cuban music before moving to New York City in 1999, where he became a leading figure as both a performer and a composer. Since then, he has led his own ensembles, worked with jazz legends, and developed a wide catalog of original works spanning duos to large ensembles.
Prieto’s recent 2024–2025 work highlights his continued innovation and leadership. In September 2024, he released his tenth studio album, 3 Sides of the Coin, reuniting his Sí o Sí Quartet on a set of complex compositions that draw on Cuban roots, jazz, and other global influences. That album has been performed live at venues such as The Jazz Gallery and recognized for its rhythmic and melodic breadth. In 2025, he published his third book, What Are the Odds? A Journey on Latin Rhythms and Meters, expanding his educational impact by exploring rhythmic frameworks and teaching methods that inform contemporary performance and composition. His work at PASIC 50 includes clinics and performances centered on these ideas, reflecting his dual commitment to artistry and education.
In addition to his own recordings and writings, Prieto remains active as a composer for major ensembles. His orchestral work Tentación continues to receive performances with ensembles including the Louisville Orchestra, New World Symphony, and Britt Festival Orchestra, reflecting his ongoing engagement with large-scale compositional projects that fuse Latin jazz with contemporary classical elements. He also continues to lead the Frost Latin Jazz Orchestra at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where he directs, teaches, and mentors emerging musicians.
Prieto’s performances and commissions have been featured at national and international festivals, and his work is noted for its innovation, rhythmic complexity, and expressive depth. His projects continue to expand how Latin and jazz traditions intersect with contemporary composition and performance practice.
