Peter Erskine, drummer, composer, and educator, whose career spans jazz, fusion, film music, and large-ensemble performance. Born June 5, 1954, in Somers Point, New Jersey, Erskine is widely regarded as one of the most versatile drummers of his generation, equally at home in small jazz groups, big bands, and contemporary settings.
Erskine gained international recognition in the late 1970s as a member of Weather Report, joining the influential jazz fusion group during a pivotal period in its evolution. His work with the band combined precision, subtlety, and strong time feel, contributing to landmark recordings such as Black Market and Heavy Weather. His tenure with Weather Report firmly established his reputation as a world-class drummer.
Beyond Weather Report, Erskine has enjoyed an extensive and diverse career as a sideman, recording with a wide range of artists including Jaco Pastorius, Joe Zawinul, Steps Ahead, Diana Krall, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and many others. He has also been a longtime member of the Grammy-winning Stan Kenton Orchestra, further demonstrating his command of big-band drumming and orchestral dynamics.
As a bandleader, Erskine has released numerous recordings under his own name, showcasing his compositional voice and refined musical sensibility. His projects often emphasize interaction, tone, and structure rather than overt virtuosity, reflecting his deeply musical approach to drumming.
Erskine is also highly respected as an educator and author. He has served as a professor at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California and has written several influential instructional books. Through teaching, clinics, and masterclasses worldwide, he has shaped generations of drummers, emphasising listening, time, and musical responsibility.
