Jason McGerr (born July 19, 1974, in Bellingham, Washington) is a drummer best known as the longtime rhythmic foundation of the indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie.

McGerr joined Death Cab for Cutie during a pivotal period in the band’s evolution, making his recorded debut on Plans (2005). His clean execution, thoughtful arrangement, and feel elevate the band’s music while maintaining space and subtlety. Albums such as Narrow Stairs, Codes and Keys, Kintsugi, and Asphalt Meadows reflect his ability to contribute a distinctive rhythmic identity.

Before joining Death Cab for Cutie, McGerr was active in the Pacific Northwest music scene. He developed a style rooted in alternative rock, post-rock, and indie traditions. His drumming favors clarity, consistency, and musical intention over overt flash, making him a respected figure among drummers who value feel and structure.

In addition to his work with Death Cab for Cutie, McGerr has participated in side projects and collaborations that further demonstrate his versatility and commitment to musical storytelling. His playing continues to be recognized for its balance of technical control and emotional support.
