Todd Nance (November 20, 1962 – August 19, 2020) was an American musician and the original drummer of Widespread Panic, joining the band in 1986 and leaving in 2016. He faced chronic illness before his death in 2020. Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., he received his first drumkit at 13 and formed a band with Michael Houser in high school.

Nance contributed to Widespread Panic’s growth and played at significant events, including a 1998 concert in Athens, Ga. He also played in the offshoot band brute. from 1995 to 2002 and contributed to Widespread Panic’s first eleven studio albums, excluding Street Dogs (2015), where he co-wrote all tracks.

Nance took a hiatus in 2014 for personal matters and was replaced by Duane Trucks. He briefly returned for four shows in February 2016 before his official departure. During his hiatus, he toured with Todd Nance & Friends, featuring various musicians.

 

Widespread Panic joined the Wanee annual lineup in 2010.
