Tato Melgar is a percussionist known for adding color, drive, and Latin-influenced texture to roots-rock settings — most notably as a longtime member of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real (POTR). His percussion work helps give the band its distinctive live energy, where the groove stays thick and rolling without losing the raw power of rock.
Within POTR, Melgar has been part of the group’s core lineup alongside Lukas Nelson, drummer Anthony LoGerfo, and bassist Corey McCormick. In an interview with Traveling Boy, LoGerfo described the band as “pretty much based here, and Maui and also ‘on-the-road’ for the most part,” reflecting their coastal home base and constant touring lifestyle.
Melgar is also closely tied to the wider Neil Young orbit through Promise of the Real. He appears on major Neil Young + POTR projects, with documented credits showing him on releases such as The Visitor (Neil Young and Promise of the Real).
What he’s doing now: In June 2024, Promise of the Real announced a hiatus after 15 years, with Lukas continuing to write, record, and perform while members pursue other projects.
Recordings / credits: Melgar’s credits include extensive work with Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real and the Neil Young + Promise of the Real era, with credits documented in personnel listings and discography databases.
