Carl Allen

2524

Carl Allen, drummer, and educator, builds on a deep foundation of jazz tradition with a career spanning performance, band leadership, production, and teaching. Born April 25, 1961, in Milwaukee, he grew up immersed in gospel, R&B, and funk before turning to jazz, a path set in motion by hearing an influential recording that shaped his musical direction early on.

Allen’s professional journey includes work with legendary jazz artists such as Freddie Hubbard — serving as his musical director for several years — as well as collaborations with Jackie McLean, Benny Golson, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Cyrus Chestnut, and many others. His rhythmic command and musical authority have made him a highly respected figure in modern straight‑ahead jazz.

Beyond his work as a sideman and bandleader, Allen has released his own albums and leads ensembles including his quartet and The Art of Elvin, a project paying tribute to the drummers Art Blakey and Elvin Jones. He also co‑founded Big Apple Productions, producing recordings for an array of jazz artists, and runs workshops and masterclasses that draw on his deep experience in rhythm and ensemble communication.

Education has been central to Allen’s career. He served on the jazz faculty of The Juilliard School — including a period as Artistic Director of Jazz Studies — and currently holds the William D. and Mary Grant Endowed Professorship of Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory. In 2025 he was named Educator of the Year by the Jazz Education Network. Allen remains active as a performer, educator, and bandleader while continuing to record and influence the jazz world.
