Kris Myers spent more than two decades behind the kit for Umphrey’s McGee, helping shape the band’s progressive jam identity through precision, power, and the ability to shift from tight composed sections into open improvisation without losing the groove. His drumming carried both sides of the band’s personality — complex rock arrangements on one hand, deep-pocket live exploration on the other — making him one of the most recognizable players in the modern jam/prog scene.
Myers joined Umphrey’s McGee early in the band’s rise and remained a major part of their touring and recording legacy through May 2025. After his departure, the band announced a transition plan that brought in Scotty Zwang for most remaining 2025 dates, with Duane Trucks handling a short Florida run. Later updates confirmed Zwang as the group’s permanent touring drummer moving into 2026, marking the end of Myers’ long chapter with the band.
What he’s doing now: Myers continues working as a freelance drummer and studio session player, with current activity and announcements appearing through his official social channels. Tour listings also show him tied to special events in 2026, including a Mexico destination appearance connected to the Umphrey’s McGee “Deep Dive” event schedule.
