Marcus Gilmore ‘s innovative approach, polyrhythmic mastery, and deep sense of groove have established him as one of the most creative voices in contemporary jazz. Born February 8, 1986, Gilmore grew up immersed in music, studying under his grandfather Roy Haynes and developing a unique style that blends tradition with modern improvisation.

Gilmore has recorded and performed extensively as both a leader and collaborator. In 2025, he released Journey to the New: Live at the Village Vanguard, capturing his ensemble’s dynamic live energy and original compositions. He also appears on Gilad Hekselman’s Downhill from Here (2025) and the collaborative album Trio of Bloom with Craig Taborn and Nels Cline, showcasing his versatility and forward-thinking approach to modern jazz.

Touring has remained a central part of his work. In 2025, he performed with the Brad Mehldau–Christian McBride trio across the U.S., Asia, and Japan, including a festival appearance at The Gilmore Festival. He also continues to perform with his own “Journey to the New” ensemble, featuring Morgan Guerin, David Virelles, Emmanuel Michael, Tim Watson, and Rashaan Carter, with performances continuing into late 2025.

Beyond performance, Gilmore’s approach has influenced a new generation of drummers, emphasizing rhythmic complexity, musicality, and dynamic control. His work demonstrates a balance of technical innovation and deep listening, earning him recognition as a leading voice in modern jazz drumming.
