Matt Garstka

1912

Matt Garstka is one of the leading drummers in modern progressive metal and fusion, known for his incredible technical precision, speed, and musicality. Born in 1989 in the United States, Garstka developed his skills from a young age, blending influences from jazz, metal, and progressive rock to create a unique and versatile drumming voice.

He rose to international prominence as the drummer for the progressive metal band Animals as Leaders, contributing to the band’s complex compositions with dynamic grooves, polyrhythms, and intricate textures. Garstka’s performances are defined not just by speed and technicality but by musical phrasing and feel, making him a standout performer in contemporary progressive music.

With Animals as Leaders, Garstka has performed on multiple albums, including Parrhesia (2022), and celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Joy of Motion with a headlining tour across North America and Europe in 2024–2025. In mid‑2025, he sustained a serious arm injury that required surgery, leading the band to cancel their remaining 2025 tour dates; the group has since focused on writing and recording new material for a forthcoming sixth studio album with long‑time collaborator Misha Mansoor.

Beyond his main band work, Garstka’s wider musical involvement includes collaborations and guest appearances — from Plini’s 2024 single “11 Nights” to projects with fusion artists — and ongoing creative efforts in electronic‑influenced and jazz‑fusion realms. He also participates in innovative drum‑related releases such as the Matt Garstka Signature Drums virtual instrument library released in 2025, capturing his custom kit and groove repertoire for modern production use.

Garstka’s approach emphasizes precision, creativity, and musical expression, with a focus on supporting the composition rather than showcasing technique alone. His playing continues to push the boundaries of modern drumming while remaining deeply musical and expressive.
