Matt Greiner

2626

Matt Greiner is the founding drummer of August Burns Red and one of modern metalcore’s most respected players — known for speed, stamina, clean double-kick control, and musical precision. He’s been a core part of the band since the beginning, helping define ABR’s trademark sound: heavy, technical, and tightly arranged, but still groove-centered.

Greiner has also built a strong identity as an educator. He launched Matt Greiner Lessons in 2020 (with song breakdowns, hangouts, and learning tools), and in 2025 he rolled out a major teaching project: a Double Bass Masterclass.

What he’s doing now: August Burns Red remains active on the road and continues booking major runs in 2026, including spring tour dates that show the band staying busy with large venue stops across the U.S. and Canada. On the personal side, Greiner recently shared that he is stepping away from at least one scheduled appearance due to the birth of his child, with Adam Gray filling in for that performance.

Personal: Greiner has also shared that he grew up around racing — attending micro sprint races with his family and listening to NASCAR on weekends.

Recordings / credits: As ABR’s founding drummer, Greiner’s playing is heard across the band’s full catalog — a long-running discography that helped shape 2000s–present metalcore drumming standards.

Gear: Evans drumheads; Vic Firth (Matt Greiner signature sticks); Zildjian (including his signature Zildjian FX Blast Bell); DW drums
