Steve Ferrone is a drummer whose deep groove, versatility, and musical consistency have made him one of the most respected rhythm players of his generation. Born April 25, 1950, in Brighton, Ferrone first gained prominence as a member of the Average White Band before building an extensive career as a session drummer and live performer with artists across rock, pop, blues, and R&B.
In 1994, he became the drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, contributing to albums such as Wildflowers and Hypnotic Eye, helping define the band’s rhythmic identity, and performing in countless live shows around the world.
Since that era, Ferrone has remained active in recording and performance. He joined Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs, contributing to their 2024 album Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits and touring in support of the release. He has also performed with the tribute band Petty People and participated in select live events and masterclasses through 2025.
Beyond performing, Ferrone maintains a presence in music education and media, including hosting The New Guy Show on SiriusXM’s Tom Petty Radio, and sharing his experience and insights with drummers and music audiences worldwide.
