Tim “Awesome” Austin earned his reputation the real way — by being the kind of drummer artists trust on the road: deep pocket, huge feel, and zero ego. Born and raised in Chicago, Austin became widely respected in blues and roots music circles for driving bands with power while keeping everything musical and supportive.
A major chapter of his career began when he was discovered at age 20 by Pops Staples, leading to decades of work with The Staple Singers (including time as band director). Later, Austin became best known to blues fans as Buddy Guy’s longtime drummer in The Damn Right Blues Band, where his groove and restraint were the perfect match for Guy’s intensity and dynamics. He also appeared as a regular participant in the Experience Hendrix Tour over many years, putting him on major stages with high-level players throughout the guitar world.
